Marc and I are heading to Chile in January for three weeks. I'm experimenting with creating a blog for the first time. I hope to add a few photos and text each day for family and friends to follow along with us.

This is our first real foray into South America and we are so excited. We planned the trip itinerary ourselves and are going alone, which feels very different from meeting a tour guide or a family member at the end of a long plane ride. 

We've brushed up on our Spanish through Duolingo a bit and are confident that we'll be able to communicate in one way or another. 

Chile has a variety of climates; a dry desert in the north, coastal towns, the central lake and wine region with the Andes to the east, all the way to Patagonia in the south. We plan to experience a little of everything. Chile is approximately as long north to south as the U.S. is east to west, so we'll need to do some in-country flights to hit everything in three weeks.

Exploring Valpo, "The Jewel of the Pacific"

Valparaiso was an important seaport in the late 19th century when Europeans were rushing to San Francisco for gold. Ships sailed around the Straight  of Magellan and restocked in Valpo. Everything changed with the construction of the Panama Canal. But the city is still an important port. We saw lots of shipping containers on our boat ride this afternoon. Valpo is home base for the Chilean Navy. It was fun to see the city from the sea on our short ride. We did a three- hour walking tour today. The city was a magnet for immigrants in the late 1800s and you can see the European influence in architecture,  food, customs, and neighborhoods.  Valparaiso boasts 4 universities, the oldest Spanish newspaper (El Mercurio) and Chile's first public library. Valparaiso

Yesterday was a travel day. I've been amazed at how well the connections have worked. Mauricio took us to the airport in Punta Arenas after breakfast. We flew the 3.5 hours to Santiago. At the airport we figured out how to get a bus into the city to get a different bus to Valpo, our colorful city by the sea. We paid our fare and, with 5 minutes to spare, boarded the fancy bus to Valpo. Two hours later we were here and by 6:30 pm we were ringing the door bell of our B&B, Casa California, in the Cerro Alegre area of the city. We met Jonny, our host who is from California, and his wife Cata (Chilean)  and sweet baby Max. We were very hungry by then. Jonny recommended a place with a view up the hill. Onces

On our way home from the falls we stopped at a restaurant high up on a hill, to experience a Chilean tradition of afternoon or evening tea called "Onces". It was kind of like an English high tea, with BREAD, fillings and toppings, cheese and meat, kuchen (they use the German word) and tea or coffee.  "Once" is the word for eleven and I'm not sure why they call tea time that. We had quite a view during our "onces". A herd of llamas was munching the grass outside the window. It was a wonderful day. Our last one here in this region.
